Totally! Unneccessary! White Guy Dub! is the latest conceptual beat tape from Bay Area producer and occasional jokester Brycon, featuring guest vocals from Mykal Rose of Black Uhuru and guest production from Maitre D. A collection of Jamaican-inspired sounds made predominantly over the last seven years, this project plays abstract homage to one of Brycon's most pivotal and early points of influence.
Part of Brycon's origin story involves early years in North Carolina, welcoming traveling reggae stars into his studio to cut "specials" for his longtime friend DJ Tablesaw. Among this star-studded parade of guests was the legendary Mykal Rose of Black Uhuru, and his visit yielded a pair of impromptu collaborations between the veteran singer and young producer. One of those tunes, "Peace", is the foundation of the project that grew to be TUWGD.
The 13 track album explores various styles of Jamaican music, filtered and franken-monstered through interpolation and instrumentation. Imagine a stoned nap under nice tropical parasol - complete with nebulous voices, deep psychedelia and arcane sound sources. "Totally" is a simple concept spun into gold, and a creatively stimulating listen from a consistently funky outpost.
